Just as Jung Woo-sung Cannot Force Moon Ga-bi to Abort, He Cannot Be Forced to Marry Either

Jung Woo-sung reportedly had a son earlier this year with a woman 16 years younger than him, with whom he had only a fleeting relationship. While he intends to take responsibility for the child, he has no plans to marry the child’s mother Moon Ga-bi, and is currently dating someone else. Each detail alone is surprising, but all of them combined make one question whether this is Korea or Hollywood.

A paternity test was conducted, and with Jung Woo-sung’s acknowledgment, it is an unchangeable fact that he is the father of Moon Ga-bi’s son. Yet, some people criticize him, asking “Are you going to label this child as illegitimate?“, and demand that Jung Woo-sung marry Moon Gabi.

From the information reported so far, Moon Gabi is said to have wanted to marry Jung Woo-sung. However, Jung Woo-sung refused because he has been dating someone else for over a year. He reportedly met his current girlfriend last year, while Moon Gabi informed him of her pregnancy in June of the same year. The timing roughly overlaps.

When Jung Woo-sung met his current girlfriend is a critical issue, as it could lead to allegations of “relationship overlap” or even “infidelity”. For an actor whose career relies heavily on image, such a scandal could be devastating.

If the relationship began when he was single, the demand for him to marry Moon Ga bi is unreasonable. No one can forcefully dictate the relationships of two consenting adults. Just as Jung Woo-sung could not demand Moon Gabi terminate her pregnancy, Moon Gabi cannot force him into marriage.

Marriage is a life-defining event, often referred to as a “major human affair”. While the birth of a child in a society struggling with low birth rates is a blessing, forcing a connection between the parents would not be right—for them or for the child. Who would bear responsibility for the emotional impact on the child if they later discovered their parents were merely a “show window couple”?

Hopefully, this conflict will be resolved in a way that ensures no harm comes to the child amidst the disputes of the adults. Everyone deserves to be celebrated simply for being born.
